Eyes are the first thing we pay attention to when we meet someone new. Beautiful eyes may compensate for other imperfect facial features. Furthermore, tired-looking or puffy eyes and droopy eyelids may not reflect the dynamic or enthusiastic personality of their owner. First signs of aging often appear around the eyes. Every morning when you look in the mirror your eyes seem old and tired. Perhaps other people even ask you if you slept well, because your eyes are puffy, with bags underneath. Fortunately, with the help of cosmetic surgery, your eyes can look much younger thanks to eyelid correction or blepharoplasty.
Aging is simply one of the reasons why eyelids begin to droop. The eyebrows brows begin to sag. Once the outer ends of the brows droop, the eyelids will look droopy, as if there was some extra skin there. Removing the “excess” skin can eliminate the droopy look.
Sagging fatty tissue in the eyelids is another cause of tired looking eyes. The fatty tissue is held by a thin partition made of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum and it stretches with age. In young people the fatty tissue is tightly supported by the partition, but with age it weakens gradually and may be the cause of “baggy” lower and upper eyelids. During eyelid correction surgery the excess fatty tissue is removed and the partition is tightened, rejuvenating facial contours.
Procedure. The eyelid correction procedure can be performed on its own or in conjunction with face and neck or eyebrow lift as well as with forehead lift. Surgery on all four eyelids takes approximately ninety minutes. The skin from the upper eyelid is removed by a precise incision hidden in the natural fold of the upper eyelid. Fatty tissue is removed by a similar incision. The edges are then closed with very fine sutures which are removed four days later. Fatty tissue from the lower eyelid is removed by an incision on the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible scars. Furthermore, this technique is considered to be the safest as it does not interfere with eyelid movement supporting muscles. Excess skin is removed from the lower eyelid by a precise incision along the fold just under the eyelash line.
Full recovery takes seven to ten days. For the first few days the skin in the corners of the eyes may feel slightly papular and the vision might be slightly blurred. Thanks to sunglasses it is possible to make a public appearance directly after the surgery and you can put on your make up within five days. Normal activity and exercise can be resumed three weeks after the surgery.
Other options. Sometimes the eyelid correction surgery is combined with a procedure called endoscopic brow and forehead lift in order to improve the height and maintain the brow contours. During the consultation we will explain if and how you could benefit from the combined procedures.
